Lucas's Shorts - Done

Well, I downsized since the other shorts were huge and I had to take them up a lot plus put darts in, so these fit a little snug. He's making a pitiful face here because I wouldn't let him point the Nerf gun at me for the picture.

They fit perfectly everywhere except they look snug in the rear, but he says they feel fine.

So here's what's special about this pair. See the nice cargo pocket? He picked out the webbing to go with the fabric - good job!

Oh, when you look down at them a certain way there seems to be something wrong...did I forget to stitch the flap down?

No, it's a "secret" pocket!

Dean's cargo shorts have this extra pocket, so I studied them and came up with a way to add it to Lucas's shorts. It just entailed an extra facing cut and stitched under the real pocket, but I figured it out on my own and I so proud of myself!!! (Hands clapping and big grin on my face - picture the Sonic commercial with the guy saying "I'm BIG boy! I'm BIG boy!")

Now Lucas and I are off to a party. Have you ever been invited to a party and asked if you could bring something? The answer is usually either, "No, just yourself," or maybe, "You could bring a dessert." Well, the answer I got was, "Yeah, you know, can you bring some pizza toppings? We're going to make pizzas and we have the dough, but if you could bring the cheese and some toppings that would be great!" Uh, okay. So I call from the grocery store and say I have cheese, pepperoni, and ham, but how much should I bring. I'm told, "Well, we're making 24 pizzas, so bring lots of mozzarella, parmesan, pepperoni and ham, and we need marinara sauce too. We've got the dough plus beer and wine." (We'll just pause here for a minute so you can let that sink in and think of what you would say in this situation. Keep in mind I'm not hosting this party.)

So I repeated back, "You're making 24 pizzas?"
"Well, yeah, but they're small pizzas, like 6 inches or something."

So I'm carrying $50 worth of toppings over to the party (guess I shouldn't be late!), but I'd really like to bring any extras back home with me. That's rude, though, isn't i; like taking wine over and then carrying it back home with you. Anybody been in a similar situation? Suggestions for how I should have handled it?

I would suggest something about the party but I'm stunned into silence by the host's request...

The shorts are cool and I really like the extra "hidden" pocket.

What was this host/hostess thinking to ask for all of those ingredients? That is just such bad manners! I'm not sure how I would have handled it differently but if I were invited to a party by them again, I don't think that I'd offer to bring anything!

My husband says that next time you should just tell them that you'll bring your own pizza.

Adorable shorts! I, too am a bit bemused by your party host. What??? I'm with Amy's hubby. Should you just bring your own food?

We have a winner - "I'll just bring my own pizza!" Amy, your husband sounds like my husband. Turns out that this was a party by an engaged couple, and only the man's guests brought food. The woman's guests didn't bring anything. The woman's guests also got official invitations, whereas the man's guests were invited verbally. Anyway, his guests brought:
meat and cheese tray from a couple
huge bowl of salad from a couple
vegetable tray from a mom/kids
cake from a mom/daughter
$50 of pizza toppings from a mom/son (and I left it there - good girl!)

The shorts are awesome and I love the pocket features.
About the hostess...I think that's pretty tacky but don't know what I would have done....probably flick my nose like HK on that one. We had a couple who went out of their way and brought a huge plate of chicken wings to a b'day party here one time. We didn't ask them to bring any food but they offered. So when it was time to go, I wrapped up the uneaten wings up for the lady to take home....and she did. In that situation, I felt it was okay.

Well, I might bring toppings but I would think they wouldn't like what I might pick out. I think that is crazy without prior coordination - yes, Pizzas would have been easier. Or I would have brought some kooky toppings. The engaged need to learn.

Hey, I should've brought anchovies and hot peppers and called it a day! I'll remember that next time. And Tracey, that was nice of you to send the leftovers home. All of his guests were older and left earlier (this was from 1-7), so we would've basically packed up the food and taken it home so the 20-somethings would've only had dough and alcohol! (Not a bad party at that age...). But seriously, I guess people left their dishes there and hope to get them later.

Normally your hostess would offer you any extras or give you a gift as you were one of the main contributors - that is what I would do if I asked for such a big favor. (Or slap you with some greenbacks when you walk in the door, saying Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!)

Some folks are a bit breezy about costs and she probably estimates your gift at around ten dollars! Crazy I know, but not everyone is analytical in these matters.

In such situations this is what I console myself with - at least I get this great anecdote out of it.

I love being slapped with greenbacks when I walk in a door! That made me laugh - and you're right, I got a great story out of it anyway!

LMAO!! I was given your blog via your sweet SIL, Elizabeth! We were also at Lake Martin part of the time you guys were! After seeing some of the videos from your 'camp', I am SOOOO dropping by next time!! I am a sewer too and have loved reading your posts! BUT, back to the post about what do you do when you take something....
Im not sure about the food, B/C when I open a bottle of wine, anywhere, I throw the cork away, therefor, finishing the wine. Seems perfectly logical to me...jus sayin...
And, I RARELY drink and Sew!!!!

Welcome Kathleen! I'm the same with wine - let's finish the sucker. And I can sew after 1 glass of wine but after 2, it's not going to end well!
